Use Counter

General Information

Overview

Counter records the number of times a web page is loaded. It does not count the number of people visiting a page, because the same people can visit the page numerous times. Users can create an unlimited number of counters, allowing them to monitor the traffic for multiple websites or even separate pages within the same website.

Every time the web page is viewed, a counter image or script is loaded. Each time the counter image or script is loaded, the count is increased by one in the EEE database. The counter image or text then changes to match the current count.

Counter can be used by anyone with a UCInetID. For more info on UCInetIDs, visit Office of Information Technology (OIT) UCInetID Information

Definition of Counter terms

  • View Counter Code - View the counter code that should be placed in the HTML of the web page where the counter will be located.
  • Change Colors - Change colors of the counter.
  • Foreground - Change the colors of the number and outline of the box.

    image of remove counter
  2. Remove the counter HTML code from your web page.
The counter should no longer be shown in the Counter Control Panel or on your web page.

Hidden counters

Counters are not tied to specific quarters so all of your counters will be listed when you visit the tool, regardless of when they were created. To make your counter workspace manageable, you may wish to hide counters from a previous quarter or other counters that you do not frequently reference.

Hiding a counter panel does not deactivate the counter; it merely puts the counter panel into an archive so that only your current counters are initially visible.

Hide/unhide counters

Hiding counters:

  1. Click Hide Counter Panel by the appropriate counter.
image of hide counter panel button
The counter should now be hidden and should only appear if you view your hidden counters.

Unhiding counters:

  1. Click Show Hidden Counter Panels.
image of show hidden counter panels
  2. Click Unhide Counter Panel by the appropriate counter.
image of unhide counter panel link
Your counter should now be visible and should appear in the Counter Control Panel.

Change counter colors

Changing the color of a counter:

  1. Locate the counter you would like to modify.
  2. Select the colors you would like for the "bg" (background) and the "fg" (foreground).
  3. Click Change Colors.
    image of change colors
Your counter's colors should now be updated according to your color selections.

Note: Colors only apply if you use an image counter. Text counters will use the same font style settings as the rest of your web page.

Reset counters

When you click the "Reset Counter" button, the number of counter hits is set to zero. The counter code will also appear on the Counter Control Panel whenever the counter is at zero.

Text and graphic counters

A text counter shows the number of views in standard text, using the same font style settings as the rest of your web page. Text counters cannot be used with EasyWebsite websites. [More Info]

An image counter shows the number of views as a PNG image that looks like what you see on the counter control panel.

Text counter scripts

In order to display the dynamically generated numbers of the text counter in a specific area on your web page, we use a simple JavaScript.

Image counter format

The image counter is in PNG (portable network graphic) format.

Difference between PNG, JPG and GIF images

PNG is one of the most versatile image formats available. It is ideal for most types of image.

GIF is widely used on the web and would work well for Counter, but it could not be used due to licensing issues.

JPEG is ideal for photos and does not work well for images with solid colors like the counter.

For additional information, see the PNG Wikipedia article

Rename counters/change the URL

Once created, a counter cannot be renamed and the URL cannot be changed. Instead, create a new counter with the desired name and URL and set its start value to equal the number of hits recording on the counter you plan to replace. This will allow you to have a different name and/or URL for your counter, without losing track of the number of web page hits that have already been recorded.

Replacing a counter to change the name and/or URL:

  1. Create a new counter.
  2. Set the number of hits to the same as the old counter in the "Set counter to:" box and click Set Counter.
    image of set counter
  3. Change the HTML on your web page to the HTML corresponding with the new counter.

Replace the following on the web page with the new counter's code:

    <!-- begin counter code -->
(Your Counter code will appear here)
    <!-- end counter code -->

  4. Delete the old counter on your Counter Control Panel once the new counter is working.
You should now have a new counter with the desired name and URL, which will begin recording web page hits starting from where your old counter left off.

Use counter code

Using counter code:

Use counter code with a non-EEE page

If you have a website that is hosted outside of EEE, you can still create and use a counter!

Using counter code on non-EEE pages:

  1. Access Counter.
  2. Enter the URL for the web page in the box provided.
  3. Enter a name for the counter.
  4. Click Make a New Counter.
image of make a new counter
  5. Add the provided HTML counter code to your desired web page.
The counter should now appear on your website and begin counting page views.

Use counter code with a Netscape/Mozilla Composer page

If you are using AdvancedWebspace, you may choose to create your website using Netscape/Mozilla Composer. If you would like to use a counter within one of these websites, you will need to upload your website to EEE's AdvancedWebspace and manually edit your HTML to include the counter code.

Why does counter code appear on some counters, not others?

Counter code is listed on some counter control panels, but not on others.

  • When a counter has no hits (counter shows zero), counter code is visible on the counter control panel.
  • When the counter gets a hit, the code will become hidden.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I insert a text counter in EasyWebsite?

Text counters are created using JavaScript which is not allowed in EasyWebsite websites.

Why can't I insert an image counter in Netscape Composer?

Because Netscape adds the height and width of the counter image for faster loading, an image counter on a web page built with Netscape Composer will not be able to increase its width if the hit count goes from 9 to 10, 99 to 100, etc. This can be overcome by manually removing the height and width attributes from the image.

Why can't I see my complete web page address on the control panel?

Due to the formatting of the web page, URLs are truncated to 50 characters. This means that a URL may be shown as abbreviated (Example: https://eee.uci.edu/07w/99105/syllabus/files/..."), but the hyperlinks will still work correctly.

Why am I missing classes?

There are several reasons why classes may be missing. Some of the most common causes are listed below.

Common causes for missing classes:

  • You may be viewing a different quarter on EEE — Switch Quarters
  • Students: You may not be officially enrolled in the class — Student Access
  • Assistants: Your instructor may not have added you in Assistants — Learn More
  • Instructors: Your Department Scheduler may have not added you to the Registrar's Electronic Schedule of Classes (eSOC)

Use the Missing Classes look-up tool to check your status and receive trouble-shooting help.
