What are Eater Evals?

Evaluation results for quantitative responses to department-activated official final evaluations are now displayed for courses taught by Senate faculty and lecturers with Security of Employment (SOE or PSOE) using Eater Evals. Individuals who have authenticated with their UCInetID will be able to review these results.

Who is in charge of Eater Evals?

Eater Evals was built based on Senate approval of a request by ASUCI with support from the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE). Specific policies regarding features and functionality are handled through the Academic Senate's Council on Teaching, Learning, and Student Experience (CTLSE).

Though the tool was built by the Office of Information Technology, policy questions should be directed to CTLSE.

Whose evaluations will be displayed?

Official, department-activated final evaluations for Senate faculty and lecturers with SOE/PSOE will be displayed unless these individuals choose to manually opt-out on a class-by-class basis during the quarterly opt-out period.

Evaluations for teaching assistants and lecturers other than SOE/PSOE are not included.

Self-activated midterm and final evaluations are not included.

Who can access evaluation results?

Individuals who authenticate using UCInetIDs.

What results are shown?

Students can see:

  • Results for official, department-activated final evaluations
  • Results for quantitative questions only
  • Results for Senate faculty and lecturers with SOE/PSOE who have not chosen to opt-out during the quarterly opt-out period
  • Results for undergraduate courses (starting with Fall Quarter 2012)
  • Results for graduate courses (starting with Winter Quarter 2016)

Students cannot see:

  • Results for self-diagnostic evaluations instructors and TAs activate for themselves
  • Qualitative results (freeform comments)
  • Results for teaching assistants or lecturers (other than SOE/PSOE)
  • Results for Senate faculty or LSOE who have chosen to opt-out during the quarterly opt-out period
  • Results for evaluations for courses offered prior to Fall Quarter 2012

Please note that evaluation forms vary from school to school and from department to department. In all cases, only the available quantitative results are displayed.

Can instructors opt-out of having evaluations displayed?

Instructors may opt-out using the EEE Evaluations tool. Deadlines for opt-out periods are three weeks for the school year, two weeks for Summer Session I & II, and four weeks for Summer Session 10 Week.

Who do I contact with questions about Eater Eval policies?

Policy questions should be directed to the Academic Senate Council on Teaching, Learning, and Student Experience (CTLSE).

Technical questions can be directed to EEE.

"Teaching Evaluations Go Public" (Sent 10/3/2012 to all faculty)

Dear Colleagues,

OIT is working on launching an ASUCI initiative to make teaching evaluations accessible to all students. They expect it to go live at the end of the Winter 2013 quarter.

This program has been in the works for a number of years. It began as a means to improve the response rate of students on the teaching evaluations. If their opinions were made public students might be more inclined to participate. They may also feel less need to rely on sites like Rate My Professor, which give a very small and, thus unrepresentative, sample of student views.

ASUCI secured the approval of various senate committees in its effort to make this initiative a reality. It is now in the hands of OIT for the design and implementation phase.

The default for the program is that a numerical response portion of all faculty evaluations will be posted unless faculty indicate that they wish to opt out. Below are links to FAQ and instructions with how to opt out. Because we intend to include Fall 2012, you must opt out on a class-by-class basis before the end of the third week of instruction (October 19, 2012).
