GENERAL INFORMATION

Overview — Teaching Well with Technology

Teaching with technology is rapidly becoming an increasingly important element in higher education. Instructional technology can be a great benefit to both instructors and students through convenient communication, access to learning materials online, and more.

It is possible to use technology to apply the seven principles of good practice in undergraduate education:

  1. Encourage faculty-student contact.
  2. Encourage student-student cooperation.
  3. Promote active learning.
  4. Give prompt feedback.
  5. Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time.
  6. Communicate higher expectations.
  7. Support diverse student talents & ways of learning.

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) is a group within the Division of Undergraduate Education that offers a wide-variety of pedagogical resources. DTEI services include workshops and consultations for faculty and graduate students, instructional technology, and classroom support.

The DTEI's mission is to improve the quality of teaching and learning through pedagogical development for faculty and teaching assistants; to promote the use of innovative teaching techniques, including the use of instructional technology; and to foster campuswide conversation about enhancing student learning through innovative teaching.

Encourage faculty-student contact

Research has shown that communication between faculty and students is an important factor in a student's motivation and involvement in the course.

Using gradebook to enhance faculty-student contact:

  • Distribute grades to students so they can check their progress in the course throughout the quarter.
  • Add notes to the class and/or individual students when you distribute grades to encourage and inspire students.

Encourage student-student cooperation

An important aspect of learning is team-work and group cooperation. Working together in teams to solve a problem or complete an assignment promotes the discussion of ideas and opinions among peers.

Using gradebook to enhance student-student cooperation:

  • Utilize grades to increase student involvement in the class in order to achieve better grades.
  • Distribute grades and include graphs to display statistical information on how the rest of the class did comparatively.

Promote active learning

Creating assignments that require students to apply real world knowledge and events, involve discussion, and critical thinking about past experiences all contribute to increasing active learning.

Using gradebook to enhance active learning:

  • Award extra credit for students who choose to complete additional assignments beyond course requirements.

Give prompt feedback

Throughout the quarter, it is important to respond to student inquiries and requests as soon as possible, including the grading of assignments. Doing so makes a large difference in the motivation and involvement of students.

Using gradebook to enhance prompt feedback:

  • Allow students to review their grades for completed assignments, quizzes, and tests students quickly and privately.
  • Give students feedback and suggestions for improvement when distributing grades.

Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time

Encouraging student use of technology to reduce wasted time will help to increase the quality of work and time spent completing tasks.

Using gradebook to enhance time on task and reduce wasted time:

  • Access grades anywhere, any time.
  • Allow students to check grades online, saving time and resources.

Communicate higher expectations

Ensure students are aware of what is expected of them and the work they submit.

Using gradebook to communicate higher expectations:

  • Make grades available for students to check their progress and make note of any needs for improvement throughout the quarter.

Support diverse student talents & ways of learning

Students learn differently and should be given the opportunity to express their unique talents and strengths throughout the course in various ways.

Using gradebook to support diverse talents and ways of learning:

  • Set assignment weights with categories to allow students who do well in different types of assignments to show their strengths.
  • Drop the lowest score in gradebook to give students a boost while encouraging them to keep their grades up.
