Overview — Teaching Well with Technology

Teaching with technology is rapidly becoming an increasingly important element in higher education. Instructional technology can be a great benefit to both instructors and students through convenient communication, access to learning materials online, and more.

It is possible to use technology to apply the seven principles of good practice in undergraduate education:

  1. Encourage faculty-student contact.
  2. Encourage student-student cooperation.
  3. Promote active learning.
  4. Give prompt feedback.
  5. Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time.
  6. Communicate higher expectations.
  7. Support diverse student talents & ways of learning.

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) is a group within the Division of Undergraduate Education that offers a wide-variety of pedagogical resources. DTEI services include workshops and consultations for faculty and graduate students, instructional technology, and classroom support.

Mission statement from the DTEI website:

The DTEI's mission is to improve the quality of teaching and learning through pedagogical development for faculty and teaching assistants; to promote the use of innovative teaching techniques, including the use of instructional technology; and to foster campuswide conversation about enhancing student learning through innovative teaching.

Encourage faculty-student contact

Research has shown that communication between faculty and students is an important factor in a student's motivation and involvement in the course.

Using Class Mail List to enhance faculty-student contact:

  • Notify students of important announcements, assignment deadlines, and other class-related messages.

Encourage student-student cooperation

An important aspect of learning is team-work and group cooperation. Working together in teams to solve a problem or complete an assignment promotes the discussion of ideas and opinions among peers.

Using class mail list to enhance student-student cooperation:

  • Create a discussion mail list to let students send messages to the entire class, encouraging collaboration and discussion.

Promote active learning

Creating assignments that require students to apply real world knowledge and events, involve discussion, and critical thinking about past experiences all contribute to increasing active learning.

Using class mail list to enhance active learning:

  • Send students links to course related learning material.
  • Notify students of upcoming department events like guest speakers, film forums, and other special lectures which some may be interested in attending.

Give prompt feedback

Throughout the quarter, it is important to respond to student inquiries and requests as soon as possible, including the grading of assignments. Doing so makes a large difference in the motivation and involvement of students.

Using class mail list to enhance prompt feedback:

  • Allow students to easily contact you if they have any important questions or comments about assignments, grades, etc.
  • Manage a class mail archive for students to refer to any missed emails that contain important announcements.
  • Share answers to common questions with your whole class.

Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time

Encouraging student use of technology to reduce wasted time will help to increase the quality of work and time spent completing tasks.

Using class mail list to enhance time on task and reduce wasted time:

  • Send reminders to students regarding upcoming due dates to keep students on task.
  • Combine several classes, such as discussion sections or lab sections, into a single class mail list to email all students at once.
  • Answer common questions and cover administrative information via email, rather than during class time.

Communicate higher expectations

Ensure students are aware of what is expected of them and the work they submit.

Using class mail list to communicate higher expectations:

  • Send assignment rubrics that clearly communicate assignment goals.
  • Send a message to prepare students for upcoming assignments and requirements.

Support diverse student talents & ways of learning

Students learn differently and should be given the opportunity to express their unique talents and strengths throughout the course in various ways.

Using class mail list to support diverse talents and ways of learning:

  • Send links and/or attachments of other study materials for students who learn best on their own.
