General Information

Overview

Quiz allows UC Irvine staff to create, distribute, and grade online quizzes for anyone with a UCInetID. Quizzes can be modified in a variety of ways according to specific goals. For instance, quiz administrators have the ability to:

  • Make quizzes graded or ungraded.
  • Choose from a variety of question types.
  • Have an unlimited number of questions.
  • Create timed or untimed quizzes.

Quiz allows UCI staff to distribute quizzes to:

  • Specific people.
  • Anyone in UCI, as long as he or she is given the URL to the quiz.

The only requirement for the quiztaker is a UCInetID.

For purposes of this documentation, "instructors" and "assistants" may be used interchangeably to refer to quiz administrators, and "students" may be used to refer to participants.

Why can't Survey or Quiz be used for evaluations?

Neither EEE Survey nor Quiz is designed for conducting course evaluations.

Here is a breakdown of some of the critical differences that separate Evaluations from Survey and Quiz:

  • The Academic Senate reviewed and approved the EEE Evaluations system for official, final evaluation use; the Academic Senate has not reviewed or approved similar use of the Survey or Quiz tool
  • Evaluations are always anonymous; surveys can be set to either 'Identified' (default) or 'Anonymous;' quizzes are never anonymous
  • Evaluation participant lists are not available until a minimum of 5 students have participated; Survey requires only 2 participants and Quiz has no minimum before releasing the participant list
  • Midterm Evaluation results are not available until the evaluation closes and Final Evaluation results are not available until the Registrar's grade submission deadline has passed; Survey and quiz results are available immediately, as they come in
  • Evaluation results show text comments in alphabetic order, while survey and quiz responses are shown in the order received and include an individual view making it possible to correlate a response to one question with the same individual's response to other questions
  • Evaluation results are confidential and are released only to the individual evaluated and the specially authorized department evaluations administrator(s); survey and quiz results are not confidential and the survey or quiz's administrator can share those results with anyone at UCI by identifying them as an additional administrators or results viewers

For these reasons, EEE does not provide students with the same level of assurance regarding their anonymity in completing surveys and quizzes.

Deleting unsubmitted quizzes for students to retake

The time limit on a timed quiz begins ticking away immediately when a student views the quiz. If the student clicks 'Cancel', closes the window or otherwise exceeds the time limit without submitting their response, the time continues to tick away. The student can re-enter and submit the quiz later, but the the total time recorded for the quiz will be the amount of time that has passed since the student first clicked 'Take Quiz.'

If the quiz administrator would like to reset the quiz timer for a student who has an in-progress submission, the instructor should direct the student to re-enter and submit the quiz, then the instructor can delete the initial submission from the results to allow the student to restart the quiz.

Deleting unsubmitted quizzes:

  1. Verify that you are viewing the "Assigned Quizzes" tab.
    Image of Assigned Quizzes tab

Edit assigned quizzes' content

Assigned quiz content (questions, answers, points) cannot be edited
Proof-read your quiz before you assign it. Assigning a quiz on EEE is like printing out and distributing hard copies to students in class. There is no way to edit a quiz already printed on paper, and likewise no edits can be made to an already assigned quiz on EEE.

Please note that while you cannot edit assigned quiz content (questions, answers, points), you can edit assigned quiz settings (who can take the quiz and when).

For more information on EEE's Policy regarding edits to assigned quizzes, see Policy and Procedures: Editing Assigned Quizzes.

  4. Click Delete Selected if you are sure you want to cancel the assigned quiz.
    image of delete selected button
Your assigned quiz should now be canceled, but it will still be available to edit and reassign in your "Quiz Library."

Why assign to classes, not UCInetIDs?

It is strongly recommended that you assign quizzes to classes, rather than individual UCInetIDs, whenever possible.

If you need to include students who are not officially enrolled, assign the quiz to the class and add the additional UCInetIDs, rather than entering individual UCInetIDs for an entire class.

Benefits of assigning a quiz to a class:
  • You won't leave anyone out.
    • When a quiz is assigned to a class, all of the enrolled students are automatically included. You don't need to worry about forgetting any students, mistyping UCInetIDs or taking care of added/dropped students.
  • Your students will be able to locate the quiz more easily.
    • When a quiz is assigned to a class, the "Quiz" link under the class name on each student's MyEEE page becomes active. This makes it more likely that students will notice open quizzes and remember to complete them.

By contrast, when a quiz is assigned to a student's UCInetID, the student must click the "ToolBox" link, and then the "Quiz" link. Students typically access all their class resources from their MyEEE pages and are not accustomed to using the ToolBox.

Set email reminders

Schedule a custom email reminder and any identified participant who has not yet taken the quiz by the selected date and time will receive a copy. Participants who have already taken the quiz will no longer be sent future scheduled reminders, so you can schedule as many as you need without filling the inbox of anyone who already participated!

What's an IP address?

An IP address is a type of a numerical identifier for computers and mobile devices such as smartphones. It is a series of four numbers separated by three periods (such as 172.16.254.1) or a series of numbers and letters separated by colons (such as 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1).

IP addresses are shown in a participant's activity log in Quiz. Each action is marked with the originating IP address. This can be useful in detecting suspicious activity in case a series of immediate actions are coming from multiple IP addresses.

A single device does not always have the same IP address. The IP address will depend on the location that the participant is connecting from. For example, a student's laptop computer will have a different IP address when connecting from home and from campus. Multiple participants may also share IP addresses when connecting from the same location, such as a WiFi network at home.

Here are three example scenarios to consider when reviewing IP addresses in logs:

  • Scenario 1:
Four students meet at an apartment. Each brings his or her own laptop. All four are connecting to a wireless router in that apartment. All four students' logs would show the same IP address since they are all connected to the same wireless router, even though they are working on four separate laptops.
  • Scenario 2:
Four students are using library computers on campus. The computers are next to each other in a library computer lab and whether or not the students are interacting with one another in any way, their logs would show four unique IP addresses.
  • Scenario 3:
Four students are using their laptops on the campus wireless network. Because of the way the campus network is configured, regardless of their physical location(s) the four students' logs would show four unique IP addresses.

DELETING OR ARCHIVING QUIZZES

Differences in archiving & deleting quizzes

Archiving vs. Deleting (and why archiving is better):

The difference between an archived and a deleted quiz is that a deleted quiz can never be retrieved, whereas an archived quiz can. We strongly recommend that you archive rather than delete unwanted quizzes. That way the quizzes will no longer clutter up your "Quiz Library," but they can still be retrieved and unarchived for later use.

Archive/delete quizzes

Both assigned and unassigned quizzes can be archived. Archiving an assigned quiz removes it from the student's view. It can be unarchived later allowing the student to view it again.

Archiving an unassigned quiz:

  1. Verify that you are viewing the "Quiz Library" tab.
    Image of Quiz Library tab
  2. Check the box(es) to the left of the quiz(zes) you wish to archive.
  3. Click Archive Selected.
image of delete selected/archive seleted buttons
  4. Click Archive Quiz if you are sure you wish to archive the quiz.
    image of archive quiz button
Your quiz(zes) should now be archived.

Archiving an assigned quiz:

  1. Verify that you are viewing the "Assigned Quizzes" tab.
    Image of assigned quiz tab
  2. Check the box(es) to the left of the quiz(zes) you wish to archive.
  3. Click Archive Selected.
image of delete selected/archive selected buttons
  4. Click Archive Quiz if you are sure you wish to archive the quiz.
Your quiz(zes) should now be archived and students should no longer be able to view it.

Deleting a quiz:

  1. Verify that you are viewing the "Quiz Library" tab.
    Image of Quiz Library tab
  2. Check the box(es) to the left of the quiz(zes) you wish to archive or delete.
  3. Click Delete Selected.
    image of delete selected button
  4. Click:
    • Delete Quiz(s) — To delete a quiz for good.
      image of Delete Quiz(s) button
      Deleted quizzes cannot be recovered.
    • Archive Instead — To archive a quiz instead of deleting it.
      image of archive instead button
    • Cancel — To return to the "Quiz Library."
      image of canel button
Your quiz(zes) should now be deleted.

Unarchive previously archived quizzes

TROUBLESHOOTING

There is an error in my quiz - can I edit it?

UCI Public — Why can't applicants, newly admitted students, or certain others participate?

Only officially enrolled students, staff, faculty, and some alumni are able to login to the EEE website and participate in EEE tools. This means others, including applicants, newly admitted students, individuals using 3rd party IDs, and separated employees cannot login to take surveys or quizzes, participate in signup sheets, et cetera.

If you are not sure whether a particular person or group of people is eligible to use EEE, please feel free to contact us to check before making plans to use a particular tool.

Why am I missing classes?

There are several reasons why classes may be missing. Some of the most common causes are listed below.

Common causes for missing classes:

  • You may be viewing a different quarter on EEE — Switch Quarters
  • Students: You may not be officially enrolled in the class — Student Access
  • Assistants: Your instructor may not have added you in Assistants — Learn More
  • Instructors: Your Department Scheduler may have not added you to the Registrar's Electronic Schedule of Classes (eSOC)

Use the Missing Classes look-up tool to check your status and receive trouble-shooting help.

Why can't my assistant(s) access my quizzes?

All assistants that you want to have access to Quiz should be added through Assistants.

Complete instructions can be found in Assistants Help & How-to.

Foreign language characters

To enter characters such as "ä", "ê" or "ý" you may use character entities.

Using keyboard commands (such as Option-g for the © symbol) within your quiz will not produce the character when the quiz is rendered in a browser.

Character entities can be defined by name or by a numeric value. The browser interprets this information and displays the proper character. Examples:

  • Entering ü or ü produces the character ü
  • Entering ç or ç produces the character ç

For a list of available character entities, please visit the following links:

Note: Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters may not be supported on all computers on which your students are viewing your quiz. We recommend that images be utilized for these languages so that your students do not encounter technical issues that prohibit them from taking a quiz.

For assistance creating images from these character sets, please Contact Us. You may also wish to use a pre-existing image for many characters available at the following address:
