Overview — Teaching Well with Technology

Teaching with technology is rapidly becoming an increasingly important element in higher education. Instructional technology can be a great benefit to both instructors and students through convenient communication, access to learning materials online, and more.

It is possible to use technology to apply the seven principles of good practice in undergraduate education:

  1. Encourage faculty-student contact.
  2. Encourage student-student cooperation.
  3. Promote active learning.
  4. Give prompt feedback.
  5. Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time.
  6. Communicate higher expectations.
  7. Support diverse student talents & ways of learning.

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) is a group within the Division of Undergraduate Education that offers a wide-variety of pedagogical resources. DTEI services include workshops and consultations for faculty and graduate students, instructional technology, and classroom support.

Mission statement from the DTEI website:

The DTEI's mission is to improve the quality of teaching and learning through pedagogical development for faculty and teaching assistants; to promote the use of innovative teaching techniques, including the use of instructional technology; and to foster campuswide conversation about enhancing student learning through innovative teaching.

Encourage faculty-student contact

Research has shown that communication between faculty and students is an important factor in a student's motivation and involvement in the course.

Using quiz to enhance faculty-student contact:

  • Use diagnostic quizzes to asses students' progress, so in-class interactions can be focused on topics that need the most review.
  • Distribute results for students to view so they can see their strengths and weaknesses after taking the quiz.
  • Include feedback for correct and incorrect responses.

Encourage student-student cooperation

An important aspect of learning is team-work and group cooperation. Working together in teams to solve a problem or complete an assignment promotes the discussion of ideas and opinions among peers.

Using quiz to enhance student-student cooperation:

  • Assign students into groups to …
    • … work together and create quiz questions that address key teaching points.
    • … collaboratively complete a quiz.

Promote active learning

Creating assignments that require students to apply real world knowledge and events, involve discussion, and critical thinking about past experiences all contribute to increasing active learning.

  • Create open-ended questions that allow students to type responses, fostering critical thinking.

Give prompt feedback

Throughout the quarter, it is important to respond to student inquiries and requests as soon as possible, including the grading of assignments. Doing so makes a large difference in the motivation and involvement of students.

  • Distribute quiz results and scores quickly and easily online.
  • Include feedback for correct and incorrect answers.
  • View and score text responses not only to assign points, but also to enter comments for individual students about their responses.

Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time

Encouraging student use of technology to reduce wasted time will help to increase the quality of work and time spent completing tasks.

Using quiz to enhance time on task and reduce wasted time:

  • Allow students to earn credit while taking quizzes at home.
  • Save grading time and paper with online quizzes.
  • Save and reuse question and answer sets.
  • Review aggregate responses and focus class time on the topics and concepts that need the most review.

Communicate higher expectations

Ensure students are aware of what is expected of them and the work they submit.

Using quiz to communicate higher expectations:

  • Include planned quizzes in your syllabus.
  • Include sample full-credit, partial-credit, and no-credit responses in quiz feedback, so students understand your standards and expectations.

Support diverse student talents & ways of learning

Students learn differently and should be given the opportunity to express their unique talents and strengths throughout the course in various ways.

Using quiz to support diverse talents and ways of learning:

  • Quizzes can serve as a warm-up activity to allow students to start thinking about a certain topic.
  • Use quiz to foster in-class discussions to examine different approaches to a problem
