GENERAL INFORMATION

Overview — Teaching Well with Technology

Teaching with technology is rapidly becoming an increasingly important element in higher education. Instructional technology can be a great benefit to both instructors and students through convenient communication, access to learning materials online, and more.

It is possible to use technology to apply the seven principles of good practice in undergraduate education:

  1. Encourage faculty-student contact.
  2. Encourage student-student cooperation.
  3. Promote active learning.
  4. Give prompt feedback.
  5. Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time.
  6. Communicate higher expectations.
  7. Support diverse student talents & ways of learning.

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) is a group within the Division of Undergraduate Education that offers a wide-variety of pedagogical resources. DTEI services include workshops and consultations for faculty and graduate students, instructional technology, and classroom support.

Mission statement from the DTEI website:

The DTEI's mission is to improve the quality of teaching and learning through pedagogical development for faculty and teaching assistants; to promote the use of innovative teaching techniques, including the use of instructional technology; and to foster campuswide conversation about enhancing student learning through innovative teaching.

USE SIGNUPSHEET TO...

Encourage faculty-student contact

Research has shown that communication between faculty and students is an important factor in a student's motivation and involvement in the course.

Using signup sheet to enhance faculty-student contact:

  • Make signup sheets available for students to sign up for one-on-one appointments.

Encourage student-student cooperation

An important aspect of learning is team-work and group cooperation. Working together in teams to solve a problem or complete an assignment promotes the discussion of ideas and opinions among peers.

Using signup sheet to enhance student-student cooperation:

  • Create a signup sheet for students to sign up for group projects, choosing which topics they want to work on.
  • Provide a way for students to sign up and form their own study groups.

Promote active learning

Creating assignments that require students to apply real world knowledge and events, involve discussion, and critical thinking about past experiences all contribute to increasing active learning.

Using signup sheet to enhance active learning:

  • Offer students the opportunity to choose essay or project topics to work on.

Give prompt feedback

Throughout the quarter, it is important to respond to student inquiries and requests as soon as possible, including the grading of assignments. Doing so makes a large difference in the motivation and involvement of students.

Using sign up sheet to enhance prompt feedback:

  • Make signup sheets available for students to sign up for one-on-one appointments to discuss assignments, grades, papers or exams.
  • Download a Gradebook-friendly file of results to give points for participation and distribute the grades to students.

Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time

Encouraging student use of technology to reduce wasted time will help to increase the quality of work and time spent completing tasks.

Using signup sheet to enhance time on task and reduce wasted time:

  • Set timeslots for one-on-one appointments with students instead of holding blocks of office hours that students cannot attend due to their schedules.
  • Gather student participants without having to spend class time deliberating.

Communicate higher expectations

Ensure students are aware of what is expected of them and the work they submit.

Using signup sheet to communicate higher expectations:

  • Organize study sessions and encourage students to sign up for a convenient timeslot to meet and review class material before a midterm or final exam.

Support diverse student talents & ways of learning

Students learn differently and should be given the opportunity to express their unique talents and strengths throughout the course in various ways.

Using sign up sheet to support diverse talents and ways of learning:

  • Allow students to sign up for extra credit opportunities.
  • Encourage students to sign up to attend course-related campus events like special forums or seminars, guest speakers, film screenings which may offer different learning experiences.
