Overview — Teaching Well with Technology

Teaching with technology is rapidly becoming an increasingly important element in higher education. Instructional technology can be a great benefit to both instructors and students through convenient communication, access to learning materials online, and more.

It is possible to use technology to apply the seven principles of good practice in undergraduate education:

  1. Encourage faculty-student contact.
  2. Encourage student-student cooperation.
  3. Promote active learning.
  4. Give prompt feedback.
  5. Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time.
  6. Communicate higher expectations.
  7. Support diverse student talents & ways of learning.

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation

The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) is a group within the Division of Undergraduate Education that offers a wide-variety of pedagogical resources. DTEI services include workshops and consultations for faculty and graduate students, instructional technology, and classroom support.

Mission statement from the DTEI website:

The DTEI's mission is to improve the quality of teaching and learning through pedagogical development for faculty and teaching assistants; to promote the use of innovative teaching techniques, including the use of instructional technology; and to foster campuswide conversation about enhancing student learning through innovative teaching.

Encourage faculty-student contact

Research has shown that communication between faculty and students is an important factor in a student's motivation and involvement in the course.

Using survey to enhance faculty-student contact:

  • Create assessments to gather student responses and comprehension of reading assignments.
  • Gather feedback from students by polling the class on which concepts students are having trouble with.

Encourage student-student cooperation

An important aspect of learning is team-work and group cooperation. Working together in teams to solve a problem or complete an assignment promotes the discussion of ideas and opinions among peers.

Using survey to enhance student-student cooperation:

  • Assign students into groups to collaborate and design survey questions for a research project.

Promote active learning

Creating assignments that require students to apply real world knowledge and events, involve discussion, and critical thinking about past experiences all contribute to increasing active learning.

Using survey to enhance active learning:

  • Award participation points for students who complete surveys based on online reading assignments, special forums or lectures, film screenings, etc.

Give prompt feedback

Throughout the quarter, it is important to respond to student inquiries and requests as soon as possible, including the grading of assignments. Doing so makes a large difference in the motivation and involvement of students.

Using survey to enhance prompt feedback:

  • Gather quick and anonymous responses from students.
  • Use student responses to find concepts to focus on in class that the majority of students are struggling with.

Emphasize time on task & reduce wasted time

Encouraging student use of technology to reduce wasted time will help to increase the quality of work and time spent completing tasks.

Using survey to enhance time on task and reduce wasted time:

  • Review aggregate responses and focus class time on the topics and concepts that need the most review.
  • Share survey results with participants.
  • Save survey questions for future use.

Communicate higher expectations

Ensure students are aware of what is expected of them and the work they submit.

Using survey to communicate higher expectations:

  • Award participation points for completing surveys based on reading assignments that reinforce key concepts.
  • Use survey as a warm-up activity to allow students to start thinking about a certain topic so they come to class prepared for an in-class discussion.

Support diverse student talents & ways of learning

Students learn differently and should be given the opportunity to express their unique talents and strengths throughout the course in various ways.

  • Use survey to foster in-class discussions to examine different approaches to a problem.
