  • Canvas Pilot Course Space

    Learn more about the UCI Canvas Pilot in one of two information sessions

    Technology is playing a rapidly increasing role in education. UCI's primary Learning Management System, EEE, is a key part of this. In recent years the campus has begun to carefully review UCI learning management needs and how to best address them as they continue to evolve. The outcome of this is a plan to pilot a commercial learning manage ment system to augment EEE functionality. Instructure Canvas, a product colleagues here and at other campuses are usin g successfully, has emerged as the tool to consider.

    The Innovative Learning Technology Initiative (ILTI) is accepting proposals for the development of fully online courses to be offered during the academic year across multiple campuses. Resources available from the ILTI program include instructional design help, hosting, and UC-system-wide enrollment.   • Canvas Pilot syllabus

    UCI Canvas Pilot Project Spring 2015 - Winter 2016

    The Office of Information Technology, in collaboration with units across campus including the Distance Learning Center, will be piloting the Instructure Canvas learning management system in 2015 - 2016. This pilot will test expanding existing EEE offerings with a commercial LMS (Canvas) to address the increased call for third-party integration and other enhancements, without compromising EEE’s unique functionality, capabilities, and responsiveness to campus needs.

    The EEE team will continue to maintain and support the existing EEE toolset for the campus. Offering both EEE and Canvas will be a significant change for the campus and a great opportunity to increase our capacity for innovation.

    Our goal is to ensure that the UCI learning community continues to have access to the best possible learning environment. The engagement and support of instructors and students will be essential in achieving this goal

    Did you know you can use Google Drive to store files of virtually every type?

    For example, students in the department of Film & Media Studies utilize the unlimited space available in Drive to submit original, high-definition videos to instructors. The videos are uploaded to shared folders, which makes them immediately available for viewing by instructors and fellow students. Many of the students in Film & Media Studies also use the Google Drive App to click and drag files from their phone, tablet or computer into Google Drive.

    Develop a library of short videos for your students

    Students in Ko Umezaki's music courses utilize specialized software to create and edit audio recordings. To help the students understand how to use available tools, Ko Umezaki has developed a library of very short instructional videos using QuickTime. Each clip (on average, about one minute long) showcases specific functions of the specialized software. The videos are posted on YouTube and are also easily embedded in the lecture presentations prepared using Google Slides.

  • Mind Mapping as your digital whiteboard

    Mind mapping as your digital whiteboard

    In his Composition Courses, Alberto Gullaba uses mind-mapping software in place of a whiteboard during his lectures. The mindmaps creates visual representation of the mental process of categorizing topics and understanding their interrelationships. He starts with a single concept and works with the students to build a trail of thought. The collaborative creation process is projected from his laptop to the screen at the front of the classroom. Students can suggest additional subtopics, connections, and relationships. The final product can be exported and stored on a course website for students to review after the session. This digital whiteboard provides a visual illustration of the relationship between important concepts.

  • UCI Libraries Presentation Studio

    Practice what you speak

    In the course of your academic career, you will likely be asked to give a public presentation of findings or information.Your materials might include a well-crafted message, visual aids, and talking points or a script. UCI students, faculty and staff who want to rehearse a specific presentation or develop oral presentation skills can now use the Libraries' presentation studio. The studio is setup in the Multimedia Resources Center of the Ayala Science Library. You can utilize standard presentation equipment to practice with a limited audience. In addition, you can use the video camera to record your practice session for later review. Learn more on the UCI Libraries' website.
